Some people find the idea of dental treatment rather daunting. This is where sedation dentistry and sleep dentistry can help, particularly if you feel nervous, anxious, require complex or lengthy treatment to restore your dental and oral health.

At New Age Dental™, we take pride in our custom-designed clinic which has sedation equipment built into the rooms.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedatives are used to help promote a sense of deep relaxation, eliminating anxiety and fears. The level of sedation can range from mild to moderate, where you will still be awake and able to communicate with our dental team. Sedation can be given orally, may be inhaled, or in the case of sleep dentistry it may be administered through an IV.

How Does Sedation Dentistry Differ from Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry can be provided using two different approaches, depending on the patient’s needs, medical suitability, and the complexity of treatment.

Intravenous (IV) sedation involves a deeper level of sedation administered through a vein by appropriately trained and credentialed practitioners. It may be considered for patients with higher levels of dental anxiety, difficulty tolerating dental procedures, or when longer or more complex treatments are planned. Patients are not fully unconscious; however, they may experience reduced awareness and limited recall of the procedure. Protective reflexes are generally maintained, and patients are closely monitored throughout treatment.

Another option is dental treatment under general anaesthesia (GA). This involves the patient being fully unconscious while dental treatment is carried out. General anaesthesia is provided in a suitably accredited facility and is administered and monitored by a specialist anaesthetist, supported by an anaesthetic nurse, who continuously monitors vital signs such as oxygen saturation, heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure throughout the procedure.

General anaesthesia may be considered for selected patients who are unable to tolerate dental treatment under other forms of sedation, or where extensive dental treatment is required in a single session. Not all patients are suitable candidates for general anaesthesia.

In some circumstances, components of dental treatment provided under general anaesthesia may be eligible for Medicare benefits, subject to individual medical criteria and eligibility. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis and cannot be guaranteed.

The most appropriate form of sleep dentistry is determined following a comprehensive clinical assessment, discussion of risks, benefits, alternatives, and informed consent.

Medicare and Funding Considerations

In some circumstances, components of dental treatment provided under general anaesthesia may be eligible for Medicare benefits, subject to individual medical criteria and eligibility requirements. Eligibility cannot be guaranteed and is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Private Health Insurance and Medicare

Rebates from private health insurance or Medicare may be available, depending on your level of cover and the type of treatment provided. Eligibility and benefit amounts can vary between policies and providers.

We recommend contacting your private health insurer or Medicare directly to confirm what rebates may apply to your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Anaesthesia (GA)

Dental treatment under general anaesthesia (GA) involves the patient being rendered fully unconscious for the duration of the procedure.

General anaesthesia is provided in a suitably accredited facility and is administered by a registered specialist anaesthetist, supported by an anaesthetic nurse. The anaesthetic team is responsible for the continuous monitoring and management of the patient’s vital signs throughout the procedure, including oxygen saturation, heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and other relevant physiological parameters.

General anaesthesia may be considered when:

  • 1. A patient is unable to tolerate dental treatment under other forms of sedation

  • 2. Extensive or complex dental treatment is planned

  • 3. Clinical assessment indicates GA is the most appropriate option

Not all patients are suitable candidates for general anaesthesia. A separate pre-anaesthetic assessment is required, and specific risks associated with GA will be discussed prior to treatment as part of informed consent.
